KARACHI: Customs authorities, National Highway Authority and Motorway Police have devised a strategy to curb smuggling through the motorways.
Senior officers of Pakistan Customs Service including the DG Customs Intelligence Imtiaz Ahmed Khan, Chief Collector (North) Sarwat Habib Tahira and Collector of Customs Islamabad Arsalan Subuctageen held a detailed meeting with Chairman National Highways Authority (NHA) Shahid Hussain Tarar to chalk out strategy and discuss the ways and means to curb the menace of Smuggling through the motorways , specially from M1 and M2.
The meeting was also attended by DIG Motorways Sajjad Afandi and other high ranking officers of the National Highway Authority.
A detailed Plan was discussed and agreed upon for effective, durable and close coordination between the relevant government agencies so as to completely eradicate chances of smuggling through motorways.
A joint team would be setup to check movement of smuggled goods to Lahore, Sialkot and Faisalabad from Peshawar. Swabi, Mardan, Burhan, Charsadda and Peshawar inter-change are also being monitored to check smuggling.
Sources said that it is likely special spots would be setup at highways and motorways for checking and examination so that the traffic is not disturbed.
