KARACHI: I&I Karachi has recovered thousands of cartons of smuggled food items and confectionary from a warehouse at M.T Khan Road.

Information was received to the effect that some unscrupulous persons are engaged in the smuggling of assorted food stuff and storage/dumping the same at Agha Godown, situated at Miskeen Street, Off Old Queens Road, M.T. Khan Road, Karachi for further disposal and illegal sale in the local market.

A team of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Karachi (I&I Karachi) reached Agha Godown, where, two persons namely Waheed Gul and Shakir Khan were present who introduced themselves as chowkidars of the said premises.

They informed one person namely Mir Zar Ali dumped some goods previous night in one shed and kept the keys of the shed with himself, however, the said person namely Mir Zar Ali has not given any document pertaining to the stored goods. Despite repeated contacts on cell phone, Mir Zar Ali didn’t come to the premises.

The staff entered in the shed of M/s. Agha Godown and search of premises which resulted in recovery of huge quantity of smuggled/non-duty paid foreign origin misc. food stuff and confectionary. The goods were removed to I&I Karachi premises in trucks.

However, despite lapse of considerable time, no one appeared claiming the ownership of the goods. The goods were seized and FIR was lodged against Mir Zar Ali.

Meanwhile, the accused approached High Court claiming the goods belonged to Palestine Embassy and secured bail-before-arrest. Moreover, the exemption certificate for the said goods was issued in the name of First Secretary Tawfik Rateb.

Palestine Embassy has not claimed the ownership of the seized goods either.
