Karachi: New findings have surfaced, shedding light on the alleged corruption within the Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) department. Earlier, a senior officer of the Pakistan Customs Service (PCS), Nisar, had leveled serious accusations against the current Director General of I&I, Hanjra.

Reports claim that Hanjra is protecting a corrupt network within the Customs department. Traditionally, the Director leads the field formation, overseeing work distribution and transfers within the directorate. However, it is alleged that DG Hanjra has bypassed this structure, forming his own teams and compelling Directors to assign lucrative positions to certain personnel.

These individuals, referred to as “contractors,” reportedly generate approximately Rs 100 million monthly for the DG by collecting bribes from importers, traders, and clearing agents, while turning a blind eye to illegal activities. These schemes are running in Quetta, Multan, Karachi, Sukkur and Gwadar.

Personnel not aligned with DG Hanjra’s operations are allegedly transferred to the I&I Headquarters in Islamabad. Despite Hanjra’s reputation for effective project management and contributions to Pakistan Customs, his lack of operational experience in anti-smuggling and sensitive roles has raised concerns about his competence and integrity.

The allegations have sparked a call for a thorough investigation to address the claims and ensure accountability within the Customs department.
