KARACHI: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Amjad Zubair Tiwana will continue to serve in his position for 15 more days until his retirement.

Tiwana had sought premature retirement, which was granted by the Prime Minister. His tenure has been marked by significant internal dissent within the department, with many colleagues expressing resentment towards his leadership.

Tiwana, a BS-21 officer, was reportedly promised a promotion to BS-22, which influenced his actions during his tenure. Allegations have surfaced that he transferred senior officers to the administrative pool to clear the path for his promotion. Additionally, it is claimed that he falsely invoked the name of the military establishment to justify these transfers.

The situation escalated when the Sindh High Court (SHC) granted relief to officers who had petitioned against their transfers to the administrative pool. This decision rendered Tiwana’s position untenable, as it meant the suspension of all such transfers. With his hopes for promotion dashed, Tiwana decided to retire.

As Tiwana steps down, Shah Bano from the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) is the senior-most candidate for the position of Chairman FBR. From the Customs Group, Tariq Huda and Faiz Ahmed are also top contenders for the role.
