Karachi: A scuffle broke out between customs officers and Airport Security Force (ASF) staff at Jinnah International Airport (JIAP) Karachi on 18th and 19th June 2023, resulting in injuries and damage to property. The incident was captured on video and circulated widely on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation from the public and the customs fraternity.

According to sources, the clash occurred when ASF personnel tried to interfere in the customs operations and prevent them from checking the baggage of some passengers. The customs officers resisted the interference and asked the ASF staff to respect their mandate and jurisdiction. However, the ASF staff allegedly manhandled the customs officers and used abusive language, leading to a physical confrontation.

The Preventive Service Officers’ Association (PSOA), a representative body of customs officers, issued a statement expressing its grave concern over the incident. The PSOA said that the ASF staff had violated the customs mandate and encroached upon their domain, which was highly condemnable. The PSOA demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter and fixation of responsibility on the culprits. The PSOA also urged the authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of customs officers and staff at JIAP and other airports in the country.
