KARACHI: Customs Intelligence and Investigation Karachi (I&I Karachi) has detected evasion of government revenue by M/s Saad Impex on the import of paper and paper waste.

In pursuance of an information that M/s Saad Impex is involved in evasion of duty/taxes by mis-declaring the actual description and quantity or Assorted Paper/Board and Paper Waste, a container declared to contain Assorted Paper/Board and Paper Waste was blocked online after being assigned to gate staff at QICT, Port Qasim.

Subsequent to the examination, it was found during scrutiny of the GD that the Uncoated Printing/Writing paper declared / assessed as Uncoated Paper Sheet was assessed under PCT Heading 4802.5890 whereas the same is rightly classifiable under PCT Heading 4802.6200, attracting RD @ 10%, resulting in the evasion of duty/taxes amounting to Rs85,7031, which is recoverable from the importer.

When confronted, the importer M/s Saad Impex tendered Pay Order amounting to Rs.87,000/- drawn at M/s Meezan Bank in favour of Collector of Customs, Port Qasim on account of differential amount of duty / taxes.

Past clearance under wet PCT 4802.5890 has also been scrutinized and it is found out that a number of GDs were wrongly assessed.

An official said the past GDs of the importer are being re-assed and recovery will be initiated to recover the legitimate revenue of the government.

An official said Director Karachi Saquif Saeed is a very competent and honest officers and posted very able officers on sensitive positions such as Additional Directors Ghulam Nabi Kamboh (Appraisement) and Additional Collector Umar Shafique (ASO). Moreover, I&I Karachi had developed a very efficient team comprising Deputy Director Amjad Rajper, Deputy Director Nausheen Riaz and Deputy Director Tauseef Gorchani.
