PESHAWAR: Pakistani customs authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle arms and ammunition from Afghanistan into Pakistan via the Torkham border. The alert came from Chief Collector Customs Jamil Nasir, conveyed through Shakir Muhammad, Additional Collector, and Umar Jan, Assistant Collector at Customs Station (C.S) Torkham.
A team was quickly assembled under the supervision of Superintendents Zia ul Haq and Umar Badshah, including Inspectors Shah Fahad Khan and Mussawir Shah, as well as Sepoys Noor Muhammad and Wajid Ali.
At around 18:50 hours, a vehicle bearing registration number KBL-51828, loaded with coal, was flagged during scanning at the NLC Import Terminal, C.S Torkham. The scan revealed anomalies. The team revisited the vehicle at around 10:00 hours the next day, leading to a detailed examination. They discovered a hidden compartment in the vehicle, which upon cutting open, revealed a large quantity of arms and ammunition.
The vehicle’s driver had disappeared earlier in the morning, according to nearby drivers and NLC staff. The contraband and the vehicle were seized.
A complaint has been submitted for the registration of an FIR in the I&P Branch of the Collectorate of Customs (Enforcement) at Customs House, Peshawar.
