KARACHI: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) Karachi has achieved remarkable results in its anti-smuggling drive in the month of November 2023, breaking its own records and setting new benchmarks in the history of the department.
According to the official data, I&I Karachi registered 54 cases of anti-smuggling operations (ASO) in November 2023, involving goods worth Rs2.5 billion. This is a significant increase from the 46 ASO cases valuing Rs246 million in November 2022.
Similarly, I&I Karachi also made 8 contraventions in November 2023, involving goods worth Rs2.93 billion. This is also a remarkable improvement from the 10 contraventions valuing Rs658 million in November 2022.
These figures show that I&I Karachi has increased its performance by more than ten times in both ASO and contraventions in one year. This is the best performance in the Customs Intelligence and Investigation history.
The impressive results are attributed to the consistent efforts and dedication of the I&I Karachi team, led by Director I&I Karachi Engineer Habib, Additional Director Afzaal Wattoo, Deputy Director Wasif Malik, and In-Charge ASO Principal Appraiser Irshad Shah. The team has delivered exceptional performance against smuggling, targeting the untouchables and facing severe resistance and pressure from the influential elements involved in the dirty business.
Director General Faiz Ahmed has been keeping a direct check on the anti-smuggling drive, providing guidance and support to the I&I Karachi team. He has also appreciated the team for their outstanding achievements and encouraged them to continue their mission with zeal and honesty.
The anti-smuggling drive has also received a boost from the support of law enforcement and security agencies, especially after the Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir took a stand against the menace of smuggling. General Asim Munir has declared smuggling as a threat to the national security and economy, and has vowed to eliminate it with the cooperation of the Customs department.
The anti-smuggling drive is expected to continue with full force and vigor, as I&I Karachi aims to protect the national interests and revenue from the illegal trade. The department has also appealed to the public to cooperate with the Customs officials and report any suspicious activity or information related to smuggling.
