KARACHI: Customs Enforcement Karachi has recovered large quantity of smuggled betel nut from the factory of M/s golden Food Industries.
Information was passed through Collector Feroze Alam Junejo to Additional Collector Honak Baloch to the effect that huge quantity of foreign origin/smuggled, processed crushed betel nuts, along with wrapping material were lying at Golden Food Industries, Karachi and the culprits were involved in sale and supply of these hazardous goods in open markets and other parts of the country.
On the instructions of Deputy Collector Inamullah Wazir, Superintendent ASO Bashir Bhutto mounted surveillance around the premises and it was observed that the owners of the said premises would try to remove the products from the said premises, therefore in order to recover the aforementioned smuggled items.
Subsequently, a team headed by SPS Salahuddin Wazir reached there and notice was served upon manager namely Muzammil Ahmed S/o Riaz Uddin Ahmed. Search of the premise led to recovery of 16 tons of crushed betel nut worth Rs 12 million.
The goods were seized. It may be mentioned here M/s Golden Foods Industries was not importing any betel nut as no record was found, thus the owner is running an illegal business by using smuggled betel nut, which are hazardous for human consumption.
