KARACHI: Anti-smuggling organization (ASO) of MCC Preventive Karachi has seized 15 tons of smuggled betel nut which was being transported to Karachi through Super Highway.

Information was received through Collector Saquif Saeed to Additional Collector Haroon Malik that smuggled goods would be moved to Karachi in a Hino Trailer. Deputy Collector Asim Awan formed a team led by Superintendent Jamal Zia and IPS Iftikhar Hasan to pursue the information.

The suspected vehicle was spotted and stopped. The driver and cleaner of the vehicle identified as Muhammad Arshad and Ali Hamza informed ASO staff that they were carrying a consignment of M/s Unilever Pakistan Food Limited from Lahore to Karachi.

They also produced Bilty documents of M/s New Waheed Cargo Transport Services along with packing list showing the consignment to be Knorr noodles.

The ASO staff searched the container and found huge quantity of betel nut. The goods along with trailer and container cumulatively worth Rs28 million have been seized and investigations are underway.

MCC Preventive Karachi is pursuing a rigorous anti-smuggling campaign and has made several cases and seized smuggled goods worth millions of rupees.
