KARACHI: A customs appellate bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC) comprising Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi and Justice Zulfiqar Ahmed Khan stayed the recovery of custom duty and other taxes against import of kitchen cabinets.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by Al Akbar and other nine importers of kitchen cabinet from different sources of the world. A counsel from law firm Franklin Law Associates appearing for the petitioners told the bench that the petitioners have challenged the Valuation Ruling issued by the Valuation department. The appeals against the impugned Valuation Ruling are pending before Special Customs Appellate Tribunal and as such notices for recovery are uncalled for.

The bench after initial hearing while issuing notices to the respondents restrained the custom officials from coercive recovery till next date of hearing which is to be fixed later by the office of the court.

Recently a scam came to the fore where in importers of kitchen cabinet were found involved in gross mis- declaration causing revenue loss to the government.
