KARACHI: MCC Appraisement West has arrested the most wanted Moiz Bawany in Karachi. Bawany is wanted in over a dozen FIRs and is the main accused of the transshipment (TP) cargo replacement scam.
Moiz Bawany is nominated as prime culprit in four FIRs lodged by MCC Peshawar, four FIRs lodged by MCC Appraisement West, one FIR of MCC Lahore, two FIRS of MCC Appraisement East, one FIR each lodged by MCC Preventive Karachi and Directorate of Customs Intelligence & Investigation.
It may also be mentioned here that during investigations regarding mobile phones scam at Al-Hamd container terminal, it was found that Bawany was also involved.
Collector Appraisement West Ashad JAwad formed a team comprising Additional Collector Saeed Wattoo, Deputy Collector Falak Sher, Principal Appraiser Abdul Qayyum to keep monitoring and make efforts to arrest the accused.
Subsequently, after days of investigation, Appraising Officers Mohammad Ahmed, Mohammad Shahbaz and other staff succeeded in nabbing Moiz Bawany, who has been sent to jail custody after expiry of his three-day remand.
TP replacement had been a menace plaguing the country’s economy. Goods were imported from Dubai and goods mentioned in the IGM were under vague descriptions. These consignments were then moved to dry ports and the goods being high value were replaced with lower value goods during transit. The pilfered goods were then distributed among the actual buyers, basically shop owners.
It may be mentioned here that these carriers booked orders on ‘done basis’ with the buyers and then the goods were delivered to them at their places. MCC Peshawar alone had found around 1,000 TP containers, which were pilfered during the transit.
