KARACHI: Directorate of Customs Intelligence & Investigation (Enforcement) Karachi has lodged FIR against certain importers for defrauding government by mis-declaring the imported fabric and fan belts as steel remeltable scrap.

Information was received in the Directorate General, Intelligence & Investigation-FBR that M/s. Khurram Steel Mills and M/s.Unique Enterprises in collusion with their other accomplices are involved in smuggling and fraudulent import clearance of Fan Belts and Polyester Fabrics from UAE in the garb of iron and steel remeltable scrap from MCC Port Qasim.

Samina Tasleem Zehra, Director (Enforcement) asked Syed Ali Zaman Gardezi, the Additional Director to personally supervise the matter. Shah Faisal Sahu Deputy Director pursued the case.

In order to investigate, the Commercial Counselor, Pakistan Embassy, Dubai (UAE) was approached by the Directorate General to procure from the Dubai Customs, copies of Goods Declaration and other related documents of the consignments shipped from Jebel Ali (UAE) to the above named importers.

In the first instance, the Commercial Counsellor, Consulate General of Pakistan, Duabi (UAE) supplied certified documents about the containers imported therefrom by the above named importers which were cleared through Green channel from MCC Port Qasim.

It stood established beyond doubt that Khurram Iqbal of M/s. Khurram Steel Mills and Syed Muhammad Rizwan of M/s.Unique Enterprises in collusion with their other accomplices have smuggled polyester fabric and fan belts into Pakistan and fraudulently cleared the same in the garb of import of iron/steel remeltable scrap.

Offending value of the actual goods has been worked out to Rs.20.24 million involving evasion of duty/taxes of Rs13.036 million, which are recoverable from the importer.

Thus, they have inflicted colossal loss to public exchequer by evading leviable duty and taxes. FIR has been lodged and the role of other accomplices-in-crime is being ascertained.
