KARACHI: The container backlog at Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT)  has reduced by 80 percent with the joint efforts of MCC Appraisement West, KICT management and Karachi Customs Agents Association (KCAA).

Senior Vice President of KCAA Nasim Askar said that a large quantity of containers had piled up at the KICT. The Customs officials of Appraisement West examined 900 containers in just three days working 24/7, which is highly appreciable.

KCAA has requested of MCC Appraisement West to further streamline the examination and assessment process during the holy month of Ramadan so that importers would not face difficulties in the holy month.

Soruces said KICT has expanded their business beyond their capacity. KICT has limited machinery and space so they pile up the containers while their machinery is also always busy.

Customs staff sits idle three days of the week and the rest of the days in the week, Customs staff has to work very late hours even on Sundays and importers have to pay demurrages.
