KARACHI: The Establishment Division, Government of Pakistan, has terminated the appointment of Syed Muhammad Shabar Zaidi as Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and appointed Ms. Nausheen Javaid Amjad as the new Chairperson of FBR with immediate effect.
Ms. Nausheen Javaid Amjad (BS-22) is presently posted as Member (Admin) FBR with additional charge of Chairperson FBR.
An official said now that Ms. Nausheen is appointed Chairperson FBR, she would be able to take decisions with full authority, and several reforms are likely to be introduced in the near future. The official added that Advisor on Finance Dr. Hafeez Shaikh believed in professionalism and does not interfere with the workings of institutions at all.
The Selection Committee for selection of senior officers unanimously recommended that Ms. Nausheen Javaid Amjad (BS-22/IRS), presently posted as Member (Admin) FBR may be appointed as Chairperson FBR.
It may be mentioned here that Syed Muhammad Shabbar Zaidi had been appointed Chairman FBR on honorary/ pro bono basis for two years.
There was deadline of January 20, 2020 for finalising restructuring plan for FBR devised on the basis of feedback from the FBR machinery but after going on medical leave by the outgoing FBR Chairman Shabbar Zaidi the reform process into FBR severely got slowdown.
The Inland Revenue Service (IRS) Officers through Islamabad Committee prepared its report and given recommendations whereby they asked the government to keep FBR into public sector domain and opposed any proposal to convert FBR into autonomous body. On FBR chairman, they proposed to appoint someone within the fold of tax collection machinery instead of bringing in any outsider.
