KARACHI: MCC Port Qasim has started serving Contravention Reports on importers of plastic/waste through misusing manufacturing status to circumvent provisions of Import Policy Order 2016.[the_ad id=”31605″]Plastic waste and scrap is importable by industrial consumers only. However, a number of commercial importers got themselves registered as manufacturers with the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) to import plastic waste/scrap and ‘plastic dana’ as well as evading government revenue.

More than 300 containers of plastic waste and scrap had stuck up at Port Muhammad Bin Qasim, as the Customs authorities stopped clearance of these goods. These containers are imported by different companies from different sources of the world.

The importers of plastic scrap were availing undue benefit by purporting to be the manufacturers while they were actually commercial importers and selling the imported item in open market. Custom authorities have stopped the clearance of these consignments pending verification of the manufacturing facilities of these importers.

Collector Port Qasim Mumtaz Khoso formed a team headed by Deputy Collector Amjad Rajpar to visit and verify the manufacturing facilities. Rajpar submitted his report and based on his findings, Assistant Collector Yawar Nawaz has started issuing Contravention Reports on such importers.

Sources said IRS was registering commercial importers reportedly against a bribe of Rs0.5 million, while the importers getting fake registered inflict huge losses to national exchequer.

An official said that IRS had registered so much manufacturing units that as per IRS numbers Pakistan should be world’s 5th largest industrial state.
