KARACHI: Pakistan has initiated a massive operation to crack down on smuggling, corruption, and illegal activities in the country. The operation aims to empower the institutions, monitor the foreign nationals, and identify the politicians and religious clerics involved in unlawful practices.

This entire plan is the brainchild of COAS Asim Munir, and the execution began after COAS meeting with country’s business community.

According to sources, the operation has given more authority to the Customs, Police, FC and Rangers to perform their duties without any interference. Previously, these institutions were being used by influential people for their personal gains.

As part of the operation, luxury vehicles are being checked on the roads for any violations. Afghan refugees are being monitored to prevent any illegal transfer of funds from Pakistan. All illegal foreign nationals have been ordered to leave Pakistan by October 30.

The operation has also destroyed the smuggling network in the country. Raids have been conducted on the storages of smuggled goods. Politicians who have been patronizing the smugglers have been identified and lists have been prepared of corrupt politicians without any discrimination. A crackdown against them will start soon.

Moreover, the operation is also profiling the religious clerics and Madarsa owners who are billionaires and living lavish lives. It is likely that Madarsa students will not be allowed to beg for charity/alms and collecting donations by Masjids and Madaris. Some religious clerics have also been found to be involved in smuggling, according to the agencies.

Sources say that the operation will be completed before the general elections in January. The operation is expected to improve the law and order situation in the country and curb the menace of smuggling and corruption. Moreover, successful execution of the plan will boost economy, facilitate business activity and improving country’s fiscal balances.

It is estimated the rupee dollar parity will come below Rs250 through the next quarter.

The operation is being seen as a major step by the government to tackle the challenges faced by the country in terms of security, economy, and social welfare. The government has also assured that the operation will not affect the rights and freedoms of the citizens and will be carried out in accordance with the law.
