KARACHI: Dozens of constitution petitions filed by importers of LED lights were disposed of by a customs appellate bench of High Court of Sind.
The bench noted that petitions are pending since 2017 over a dispute that whether LEDs fall under exemption or under category of locally manufactured item.

The respondents include Collecter of Custom Appraisement, East and Port Muhammad Bin Qasim, Engineering Development Board and Alternate Energy Development Board.

As the petitions were taken up for hearing, counsel of petitioners submitted an Office Memorandum of Ministry of Energy (Power Division) on the subject controversy and said that as per letter, matter gas been referred to the Economic Coordination Committee of Cabinet which is yet to decide the issue.
The bench said no purpose would be served if these remain pending. The bench then disposed of the entire bunch with directions to the concerned ministry to take up the matter with ECC.

The respondent were asked to finalise  the assessment in accordance with law giving opportunity of hearing  to the petitioners/importers.
