KARACHI: The Enforcement section of Customs Intelligence & Investigation Karachi has recovered Rs221.7 million from M/s Oil & Gas Development Company (OGDC), which was short-paid on the import of seamless pipes.

Information was passed through Director Irfan Javed to Additional Director Sheeraz Ahmed regarding undue claim of exemption under SRO-678(1)/2004. Subsequently, on the directives of Deputy Director Adnan Rafiq, Superintendent R&A Fakhar Shah and his team detained a consignment declared to contain seamless pipeline imported by M/s. Oil & Gas Development Company Ltd (OGDC), after being assigned to gate out at MCC (East).

As per GD, M/s OGDC imported seamless pipeline from China and got cleared under HS code 7304.1900 claiming exemption under SRO-678(I)/2004. The GD was assessed and cleared by the Collectorate under claimed exemption.

Scrutiny of the GD revealed that the exemption was wrongly claimed as it is not admissible on the goods being locally manufactured. The representative from M/s OGDC when confronted admitted the position and submitted pay orders amounting to Rs221.715 million against the differential amount of duty and taxes.
