KARACHI: Dr. Muhammad Jahanzeb Khan, BS-22 officer of Pakistan Administrative Service, has been appointed as Chairman of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) with immediate effect and until further orders.Jahanzeb Khan was awaiting posting at the Establishment Division.
Jahanzeb Khan is 25th chairman of the FBR and he will assume charge from Ms. Rukhsana Yasmin, who took over the charge on July 02, 2018.
Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan belongs to Pakistan Administrative Service(PAS) of 15 Common Badge.
He belongs to village named as Jhagra near Peshawar. He joined Civil Service in 1988 as Assistant Commissioner in KP. He has served in various positions in KP. In senior positions he has served as Commercial Counseller in Paris France. Lately he has served as Secretary Finance in Punjab province and Chairman P&D Punjab Govt.
The new minister and chairman will be faced with a number of challenges such as broadening of tax base, rationalization of policies, while revenue evasion through misuse of SROs, misuse of green channel facility, under-invoicing and bogus companies registered with the Inland Revenue just to avail exemptions are some of the challenges.
The most important would be the proper investigation and prosecution of officers involved in the green channel scam. Controlled smuggling under patronage of officers also needs attention.
Chief Collector Abdul Rasheed Shaikh and Director General Shaukat Ali are said to be involved in smuggling and misuse of green channel facility. They shuffled officers and officials abnormlabnto create an environment of fear.
Similarly, a proper strategy is needed to streamline sales tax and income tax collection.
Sources said a large scale transfers and postings of BS-21 officers is likely to be notified on Friday.
