KARACHI: MCC Port Qasim has recovered huge quantity of betel nut from transshipment consignments destined for NLC dry port, Quetta.
Information was received through Collector MCC Port Qasim Chaudry Jawaid that an attempt would be made to smuggle betel nut from Jebel Ali, UAE. Accordingly, Additional Collector Yaseen Murtaza mounted up strict surveillance on consignments shipped from Jebel Ali, UAE.
During scrutiny of imported consignments conducted by Principal Appraiser Shahid Rizvi, and Appraising Officer Anwer Zeb under the supervision of Deputy Collector CIU Salman Afzal, it transpired that two consignments destined for NLC dry port Quetta, were imported in the name of M/s Balochistan Enterprises said to contain wax granules stuffed in two 40-feet containers. These containers were shipped from UAE.
The subject containers were put to examination by the CIU team which led to recovery of huge quantity of betel nut instead of the declared wax granules. The containers have been detained and investigations are under way.
