KARACHI: The Customs Authorities have foiled a bid to smuggle mobile phones worth Rs20 million into the country and arrested a passenger in this regard.

Following the directives of Tariq Huda Collector Preventive, Additional Collector Tahir Qureshi and Assistant Collector Mukhtar Shaikh checked the consignments cleared through the ‘green Channel’ and recovered 307 mobile phones including Samsung Galaxy (different models), Samsung Core and Iphone, which are worth around Rs20 million.

The arrested passenger Mohammad Kashif is being interrogated to acquire the details of market buyers of these mobile phones and the travelling data of the accused.

Moreover, a couple of days earlier, a team of Directorate General Customs Karachi acting on the information of DG I&I Lutfullah Wark seized three vehicles loaded with mobile phones and laptop computers. These goods had been cleared without the payment of taxes/duty through ‘khaip’.

The team of Directorate of Customs Intelligence along with Customs Arrival staff checked suspicious passengers; but over 39 passengers tried to flee leaving their consignments. However, the Customs authorities seized consignments worth Rs50 million and acquired the details of these passengers; further action is pending till Monday, June 30, 2014. The Customs Preventive is evaluating all the seized consignments .

According to sources, DG Lutfullah Wark has forwarded a summary to FBR in which abnormally long posting of Assistant Collector Arrival and his numerous trips to Dubai have been mentioned.
