KARACHI: MCC Appraisement East has detected evasion of government’s legitimate revenue by M/s Xing Enterprises on import of toys through mis-declaration of description.
Collector MCC Appraisement East Saeed Akram has marked 17 containers under three GDs filed by M/s Xing Enterprises for examination.
Information was received from Chief Collector MCC Appraisement South Abdul Rasheed Sheikh that certain importers were clearing toys through mis-declaration and evading government revenue. Acting on the information, Collector Saeed Akram marked all the containers under three GDs for examination.
The importers had declared the goods as children plastic toys spare body parts to take an attempt for getting the goods assessed on suppressed value for evading duty and taxes, while the imported goods are actually battery operated ride on toy car in SKD condition.
These importers have acquired over five WeBOC IDs and operate under different names. It was learnt that the practice was on for the last five years and these unscrupulous elements were paying 5.0 percent duty through the mis-declaration instead of leviable 20 percent.
Sources said it was a cartel involved in inflicting loss on to the national exchequer to the tune of billions of rupees. It was also known that this cartel was also publishing a weekly magazine, which was only distributed among Customs employees. Moreover, these people also have links with a third-grade news channel to pressurize and blackmail Customs officers and officials.
It may be mentioned here the sole purpose of the said magazine is to pressurize and defame the officers/officials so that their wrongdoings could be ignored. The said news channel has also been involved in character assassination of honest and competent Customs employees such as Additional Collector Yasin Murtaza and many others.
This group of toy importers clear their consignments through MCC Port Qasim, MCC Appraisement East, MCC Appraisement West, MCC Multan and MCC Lahore as per the convenience.
Sources said officers and officials are faced with a tricky situation as the high-ups are taking action on any compliant against them without any investigation and affording opportunity of a proper hearing.
