KARACHI: The Karachi Customs Agents Association (KCAA) has raised alarm over persistent operational delays at Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), warning of severe disruptions to trade and financial losses for importers.
In a formal letter addressed to KICT’s administration, the association highlighted growing backlogs in container grounding and examination, citing inefficiencies that have exacerbated port congestion. According to reports, containers scheduled for priority examination have not been processed on time, leading to escalating demurrage and detention charges.
The KCAA further flagged security concerns, including repeated incidents of cargo theft and pilferage, urging immediate action to safeguard goods. Labor shortages and inadequate handling equipment have also contributed to delays, particularly in cargo de-stuffing and re-stuffing operations.
A recent examination report detailing the backlog showed a sharp increase in pending inspections following the Eid ul Adha holiday. The association is now calling for an expansion of designated examination areas and a waiver of demurrage charges for delays directly attributable to KICT’s operations.
“If the current pace continues, the KCAA may have to reconsider its cooperation with KICT in the interest of trade facilitation,” stated Mansoor Ali, General Secretary of KCAA, in the letter.
The association has formally requested urgent intervention from customs authorities to resolve these pressing issues, warning of further disruptions if immediate measures are not taken.
