KARACHI: Lawyers of Karachi and Sindh in general have observed May 12 a black days in remembrance of May 12 Mayhem which occurred 18 years back during lawyers movement for restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry sacked by General Pervez Musharraf.

More than 50 people were killed in pitched battles on May 12, 2007 in Karachi as Iftikhr Muhammad Chaudhry arrived in Karachi to attend as Chief Guest, a meeting arranged by Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA).

The day is remembered as deadliest day in history of Karachi, Dozens of cases were registered but none of them reached logical conclusion due to a host of reasons including fear amongst witnesses.

The lawyers and members of Karachi Bar Association did not attend court proceedings here today after 11 a.m and instead attended general body meeting of KBA where they remembered their fellows who died on the day. Paying tributes to those who lost their lives on May 12, 2007, the speakers re-pledged to lay their lives for the cause of independence of judiciary.
