KARACHI: Lawyers across Sindh province stayed away from court proceedings on Tuesday in protest over assassination of Lateef Afridi, former President of Supreme Court Bar Association and one of the senior most lawyers of the country.

The courts opened but proceedings were halted as no lawyer appeared.

The lawyer bodies including Sindh Bar Council, Sindh High Court Bar Association Karachi Bar Association and other bar associations held emergency meetings where rich tributes were paid to deceased lawyers known as “Lala” (Big Brother) by the community.

The lapse of security leading to incident inside bar room was declared failure of security and demands were raised for increased security at bar associations.

Fateha was also offered for the departed soul amid deep grief. The Bar Association of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa where Lala Afridi was elected president seven times has announced three days of mourning.

A personal enmity due to killing of a judge of his own family is stated to be the reason behind brutal killing. The killer has been arrested from the spot just after the incident and likely to be tried by an Anti Terrorist Court.
