KARACHI: Customs Intelligence Karachi (I&I) has expedited the anti-smuggling efforts and seized smuggled goods worth Rs154.6 million in just four days.

Information was passed through Director Saquif Saeed to Additional Director Nausheen Faisal that a particular group involved in smuggling will attempt to transport large quantity of betel nut, gutka and cigarettes into Karachi, which would then be distributed in sub-urban areas.

Deputy Director Inamullah Wazir deployed ASO team comprising Superintendent Tariq Bhutto,  Intelligence officers Hatim Bhayo, Mohammad Nadeem, Zubair Ahmad,  Zubair Bhatti and others officers and subsequently suspected passenger bus was stopped in Liaquatabad area. The checking led to recovery of hazardous gutka, betel nut and foreign origin cigarettes worth Rs26 million. It is interesting to note all passenger buses pass through Mochko and Hamdard check posts, and other security agencies to enter Karachi and yet such large quantity of smuggled goods reach Karachi undetected.

Moreover, ASO of I&I Karachi launched a crackdown on non-customs-paid vehicles and seized over a dozen vehicles worth Rs60.5 million.

Further, other seized goods include diesel, tyres, clothing, dried milk, tiles, cosmetics and edible items.

Value of the seized goods in four days come to Rs154.6 million.
