Innocent until proven guilty maxim will be followed says SHC bench

KARACHI: Hearing a case of non release of construction machinery vehicles, a customs appellate bench of High Court of Sindh said irrespective of all odds and criticism it will follow the maxim “innocent until proven guilty”.

The bench earlier heard Zain Jatoi advocate, counsel for an importer who imported mixer trucks. He submitted that despite orders passed in January 2019, the vehicles were not released on allegation that chassis was tampered. The bench perusing the comments filed by the respondent custom officials agreed with the contention of petitioner side that instead of specific allegation, general apprehensions were relied upon. What are the specific allegations, the bench inquired from the counsel appearing for the respondent custom officials who sought time to make queries from the officer concerned.

The bench later adjourned further proceedings allowing request of counsel for custom officials.
