DP World Karachi – Qasim International Container Terminal (QICT) received 2 new Super-Post-Panamax quay cranes on the 13th of January 2020, and with this inclusion, QICT will have 11 quay cranes to handle 2 vessels at Terminal 2 (berth 8 and 9) and enhance its vessel productivity enabling faster turnaround. Additionally, QICT has also received 64 brand new terminal tractors that would further improve yard productivity.

QICT has the distinction of being the first modern container terminal in Pakistan launching its operation in 1997, and the only terminal commanding a yearly throughput of more than 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). With the arrival of the 2 new cranes, QICT has affirmed its strong commitment to the growth of Pakistan’s trade and economy, and would continue to do so in the future.

DP World Karachi – QICT is the only terminal in Pakistan offering its customers multimodal solutions in terms of transporting Karachi based cargo to its National Logistic Cell Container Terminal. NLCCT facility situated at Mai Kolachi to having a rail service for its Dry Port in Lahore Prem Nagar and delivering cargo further at the customers’ premise via road. DP World Karachi also operates a Container Freight Station (CFS) yard at Port Qasim.

QICT has the distinction of being the first terminal to introduce electronic delivery order as well as online payment solutions for the end customer. The main purpose of taking all these initiatives is to enable trade with ease of doing and reducing the costs.

Future Investments

DP World Karachi is not only investing in equipment but also in the yard expansion. It has bought 28 acres of Port Qasim Authority’s (PQA) Berth Back land dedicated for container terminal expansion which is being reclaimed and developed. This development will enhance DP World – Karachi handling capacity by almost 300000 TEU yearly.

To reduce the cost of trade and revolutionise the way export documentation is dealt with in Pakistani Ports, DP World Karachi is setting up a dedicated truck parking of 35 acres that will be operated with the assistance of an in-house developed Gate Management System to reduce the truck waiting time and its cost, and allow all exporters to upload their shipping documents seamlessly.
