Customs court extends remand of accused who fired at officials

KARACHI: The Special Judge, Customs, Excise and Taxation on Monday extended physical remand of two accused arrested by Pakistan Customs on charge of firing at officials in order to get away with the containers filled with smuggled goods.

Both the accused including one Muhammad Hanif and another were produced before the Presiding Officer Mrs Sadaf Asif. The court inquired from Investigating Officer Asfandyar about a smuggled vehicle involved in the case. The hearing was adjourned briefly allowing IO to go through the file. At the fag end of today’s court proceedings, the matter was taken up again. The IO told the learned judge that reference was made to a V8 vehicle which was occupied by officers of the customs department. The court then observed that as beetle nuts are out of jurisdiction of the court and hence accused will be tried for obstructing the government officials from performance of their duty.

The court later extending remand of the accused, adjourned further proceedings.
