Court work halted as lawyers resort to boycott

KARACHI: The routine work at city courts, Sindh High Court and other came to grinding halt as the lawyers boycotted the proceedings on Wednesday.[the_ad id=”31605″]The boycott was on a call by Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), the apex representative body of lawyers which is protesting against amendments in section 22A and 22 B of Criminal Procedure Code (Cr.P.C), The section 22 A pertains to private complaint in case of non-registration of FIR while section 22-B pertains to protection of a complainant.

The powers were earlier vested with ADJ and District & Session Judge which was now entrusted to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has declared this unconstitutional and tentamount to curtailing the powers of the judiciary.

The court work will also remain suspended on Thursday while PBC has decided that a token strike wil be observed on every Saturday till the amendment is revoked.

The boycott lead to adjournments of thousands of cases in Karachi district alone.
