KARACHI: A division bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC) comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Muhammad Humayun Khan on Tuesday ordered an importer to deposit Sales Tax at a rate of 17 per cent with the Nazir of SHC.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by one Muhammad Yahya against Secretary FBR, Collector Customs (Appraisement) South and Collector Customs Port Muhammad Bin Qasim.

The petitioner challenged the imposition of Sales Tax on Cheese at import stage at a rate of seventeen per cent. The Customs later agreed to release the consignment on 10 per cent ST but the petitioner moved the court seeking zero rating on ST.

The bench today after hearing the counsel for the petitioner and Masooda Siraj advocate, counsel for the respondent Custom department as interim relief ordered the importer to pay the Sales Tax at a rate of 17 per cent pending decision in his case if he wants his three consignments released.
