KARACHI: A divisional bench of High Court of Sindh (SHC) comprising Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi and Justice Abdul Malik Gaddi on Friday issued notices to Secretary Excise and Taxation, Director General, Excise, Taxation and Narcotic Control, Motor Vehicle Registration Wing and President National Bank of Pakistan (NBO) for September 20.
The bench earlier heard Iqbal Yousuf advocate, counsel for petitioner Muhammad Khalid who filing a public interest litigation raised the issue of inadequate number of facilities for collection of road tax.
The petitioner maintains that more than 2.6 million vehicles are registered in Sindh with 1.5 million registered alone in Karachi.
There are only 11 bank branches/booths for collecting Road Tax as a result the owners of vehicles face in-surmountable task of depositing the tax. The situation is resulting in loss of billions of rupees to the provincial tax revenue collection.
The petitioner prays to the court to direct the petitioners to increase the motor vehicle tax collection points, extend facility of deposition after office hours i.e in the evening time and collection/deposition even on Saturday to facilitate the tax payers.
