KARACHI: Chairperson Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Rukhsana Yasmeen will meet Federal Finance Minister Asad Umar on Monday in Islamabad, which will be Chairperson FBR’s first meeting with the minister.
Chairperson would also brief the minister about the issues faced by the board, while profile of senior officers would also come under discussion. Sources said this meeting would determine whether Rukhsana Yasmeen would continue to be the Chairperson FBR, or would she be replaced.
The meeting would review very measures and policy guidelines to increase revenue collection through broadening tax net. The meeting will also discuss affairs of Customs in relation to revenue evasion through misuse of SROs, misuse of green channel facility, under-invoicing and bogus companies registered with the Inland Revenue just to avail exemptions. Similarly, a proper strategy is needed to streamline sales tax and income tax collection.
Rukhsana Yasmeen is a seasoned officer and she has experience of both Customs and Inland Revenue. She is retiring in April 2019.
An official said billions of rupees of revenue was stuck up due to cases in litigation, the meeting would also discuss such issues. Sources said that recently an inquiry into the misuse of green channel facility ordered by the Supreme Court was shelved after a religious cleric intervened in support of the accused.
The meeting would follow large scale transfers and postings in the FBR. Sources said that a proposal is under consideration to rationalise the entire hierarchy of the Customs and Inland Revenue. Chief Collectors and Chief Commissioners will be limited to supervisory role.
