KARACHI: MCC Quetta has tightened vigilance over the movement of smuggled goods and seized 7.4 tons of betel nut worth Rs40 million in the market.

Information was received through Collector Quetta Ashraf Ali that attempts would be made to transport smuggled contraband. Customs Mobile Squad with assistance of PAF base Samungli staff seized 2.4 tons of betel nuts from an Hiace Van.

It’s pertinent to mention that while shifting of goods to Custom House Quetta, smugglers attacked Customs staff and tried to snatch the seized goods. However, after exchange of fire, Customs staff managed to take the seized goods to Custom House Quetta safely. During this attempt, a mobile squad and the van carrying the goods were badly damaged.

In another incident, on the directives of Deputy Commissioner Khuzdar Mujeeb ur Rehman Qambrani and Deputy Collector Maqbool Baloch, Customs staff and levies in a joint operation recovered 5.0 tons of betel nuts from the secret cavities of a coach.
