KARACHI: Model Customs Collectorate (MCC) of Preventive, Karachi has seized goods worth Rs35.57 million during first week of November 2013 in the ongoing anti-smuggling drive.
The Preventive Collectorate launched the drive on the directives of Tariq Bajwa, Chairman, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Nisar Muhammad Khan, Member Customs to create deterrence against illegal movement of goods and ensure growth in revenue collection.
The details of the seizure made during the period from November 2 to November 7 included: LED Smart Tvs; New Tyres; CNG Cylinder; Old and Used Tyres; Sofa/Curtain Cloths; Assorted Auto Parts; Plastic Cans of Diesel Oil; Polyester Cloth and Blankets; Korean Cloth; LED Torches; Asayesh Kashan Iranian Carpets; Diesel Oil recovered from a launch in Deep Sea; Bus loaded with different merchandise goods; Four cases of interdiction of various Foreign Currencies; Heroin from hidden crockery package.
The successful seizure was made possible after squads of preventive collectorate deputed at three places included: Ghakar Phatak; Tool Plaza, Super Highway; and Muchko, RCD Highway. Most of the cases of smuggled goods were reported at RCD Highway. The efforts of customs officials resulted in almost halt in the movement of illegal / unpaid taxes and duty goods.
On the directives of Collector Preventive Tariq Huda the team was set up headed by Shafqat Niazi, Additional Collector and Wasif Malik, Assistant Collector for the prevention of illegal goods.
After the strict control at these three places where squads were patrolling the smugglers reportedly changed their routes. The team has been assigned to also prevent smuggling at other points and ensure no goods would be moved without duty and taxes.
The reasons of change of routes of smugglers are attributed to measures taken by the FBR to enforce correct valuation at assessment stage which resulted in materializing enhanced duty collection.
At the same time the Anti Smuggling Organization of the MCC Preventive also launched crackdown against smuggled goods and made significant seizure.
The latest achievement was the result of meeting of FBR chairman with customs officials held early September 2013 where the chairman approved the setting up the check points around Karachi and Quetta for checking the illegal movement of goods.
